Sri Prasanna Virupaksha Temple popularly known as Underground Temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva. This is one the earliest temples constructed by Vijayanagara rulers.
Uniqueness of this temple is that the sanctum sanctorum is fre metres below the ground level. Roof is at par with the existing ground level.
Temple was buried under the soil and was excavated in 1980.
Since it is underground the sanctum sanctorum is always filled with water.
During rainy season it is impossible to enter the sanctum sanctorum and entry is restricted.
