One of the most revered temples in Chennai, Arulmigu Marundheeswarar is swayambu lingam and the temple is believed to be built in 10th century.
Here, Bhagwan Shiva is worshipped as Marundheeswarar- healer of all ailments.
According to inscriptions Raja Raja Chola stayed in this temple for and worshipped Bhagwan and got himself cured of an ailment.
According to mythological tales, Maharshi Valmiki worshipped Bhagwan Shiva, under the holy vanni tree, which is seen in the 1 acre sprawling temple ground.
Saints Gnanasambandhar, Appar, Arunagirinathar, Sivavaakkiyar, Vallalar and Pamban Swamigal prayed and Praised Marundeeswarar in their hymns.
Marundheeswarar Temple is counted as one of the Trinity sea shore temples in Tamil Nadu; the other two being Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore and Thyagarajaswamy temple in Thiruvottiyur.
Devasiriyan Mandapam inside the temple premises conducts spiritual discourse amil in Tamil Saiva Sidhantha everyday since 2002.
