This place of worship of Jains was constructed in 1133 AD. ‘Basadi’ is the name given to a place of worship for Jains and followers of Jainism. Basadi has become Basthi. The word " Basadi" originates from the Sanskrit word ‘vasati’, meaning a place where scholars reside beside the temple. Jainism flourished in Karnataka in south India. Major dynasties like those of Western Ganga, Kadamba, Chalukya and the Hoysalas were patrons of Jainism. Halebid in Hassan District of Karnataka is home to many such basadis which are of immense importance to the Jain religion.
